many people suffer from foot and ankle pain unnecessarily.

Podiatry is the only medical specialty dedicated to diagnosing and treating injuries and conditions of the foot and ankle. Foot pain arises due to age, neglect, injury, poor footwear or genetics. Sometimes problems arise from the presence of a particular disease. Dr. Pinsker is highly trained with years of experience treating patients in the Washington, PA area suffering with numerous diseases of the foot and ankle. Some of the more common diseases we diagnose and treat include:

Arthritis is a very common condition that affects nearly 40 million Americans. This disabling and sometimes crippling disease is characterized by an inflammation of the cartilage and lining of the joints, often leading to fluid in the joints as well. Arthritis can be particularly painful when the condition affects feet. Each foot has 33 joints that can be affected. The weight and stress that feet bear on a daily basis can lead to significant discomfort when joints are inflamed. This disease tends to become more prevalent with age, although anyone from infants to middle-aged and elderly adults can be potential victims.

There are two specific forms of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The symptoms and treatment of both forms are similar in nature. Osteoarthritis, often called “wear and tear” arthritis, is degenerative in nature. The breakdown in cartilage happens over time and the deterioration can leave you with stiffness, throbbing nighttime pain, and limited mobility. Rheumatoid arthritis is serious in nature and often causes chronic, disabling pain in ankles and toes.

Early diagnosis and quick action to seek treatment is extremely important in managing this disease. Please make an appointment with Dr. Pinsker if you have stiffness, pain, swelling or redness in the joints of your feet or ankles. Call our office at (724) 225-7410.

There are several types of cancer that can develop in the feet and ankles. Some may involve tumors while others may appear as cysts or lesions. Bone and skin cancers are the most prevalent types in the lower extremities, whether they remain contained or spread to other areas of the body. Tumors can be either benign or malignant. A benign tumor would be a mass of tissue that is not cancerous and will not spread. A malignant tumor on the other hand is cancerous and can spread to other healthy tissue. Benign tumors can be found under toenails, on top of toes, deep inside the foot and on the bottom, sides and top of the foot. Anytime you notice a lump or a bump, it is advised to have it diagnosed as quickly as possible in case it could be malignant.

Malignant melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can develop on feet. This is a serious form of cancer that accounts for over 60% of skin cancer deaths. The reason for this is that symptoms often go unnoticed due to feet being covered up or not cared for as they should be. Symptoms of skin cancers on the feet typically involve changes in moles on the skin, and again, early detection and treatment is key in preventing serious complications. Call and ask Dr. Pinsker about the “ABCD rule” for monitoring for skin cancer, and make an appointment immediately if you notice any changes in spots on the skin of your feet or ankles.

Gout is another disease that involves inflammation of joints. This painful condition is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the body. When the level of uric acid is too high, sharp, needle-like crystals form in a joint and result in significant pain and swelling. It can affect any joint but most often targets the joint of the big toe. Patients often complain of intense pain, especially in the middle of the night, accompanied by swelling, redness and tenderness. This type of pain will only worsen if left untreated and lead to joint damage. If you have pain in your big toe joint, we have targeted treatments that can ease your symptoms and prevent future attacks from occurring. Please make an appointment with Dr. Pinsker for help with this condition.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is a common heel injury that most often affects children and adolescents. This disease develops when the growth plate in the heel grows faster than the tendons and muscles that are attached to it, which causes these surrounding tendons and muscles to become overstretched and tight. Repeated stress or a traumatic injury can damage the growth plate and cause pain, swelling and tenderness. Children involved in sports that require a lot of running and jumping on hard surfaces are at risk for this condition. Dr. Pinsker has several treatment options to ease your child’s heel pain so don’t hesitate to contact us if they are complaining of foot pain. Make an appointment by calling (724) 225-7410.
