many people suffer from foot and ankle pain unnecessarily.

Cause of Painful ToenailsMythBusters has been a popular show on the Discovery Channel with a concept to perform experiments and tests to expose rumors and myths and to find out why and how things work.  In a similar fashion, when you have something wrong with your feet, particularly nail pain, you need to go into detective mode and find out what is behind the abnormality. It could be nothing, but it also could be a serious condition that could put your health at risk.

We don’t often pay much attention to our toenails but did you know they are considered to be one of the barometers for our whole health? They can provide some important clues to problems and conditions developing with your feet or in your body. To help you in diagnosing what may lie behind painful, abnormal, or ugly nails, here is a snapshot of common symptoms and causes:

Lines or depressions—these could appear after an illness, injury, or indicate that you are malnourished.

Brittle nails often develop through aging, but could be caused from a fungal infection or certain conditions and diseases such as hypothyroidism.

Thin nails with raised ridges could indicate an iron deficiency.

Change in color or shape could indicate a fungal infection or a sign of cardiopulmonary disease, psoriasis, heart disease, oxygen deficiency, or skin cancer.

Pain or lack of feeling—these symptoms may indicate poor circulation, kidney, neurological disease, diabetes, or a nerve injury.

These symptoms and causes are not meant to alarm you but to make you aware that there could be something behind changes in the health of your nails. In a quick visit with Dr. Philip Pinsker, we can identify the root of the abnormalities and address it head on with the right, effective treatment. Many foot problems and health conditions have better outcomes with early treatment. Contact our Washington, PA, office at (724) 225-7410 if you have any questions or concerns about your foot health.
