When cooler temperatures start to roll in, the gloom and doom of winter seems to lurk around the corner. For some, this impending season brings a big sigh as the fun of summer is out the door. Keep the fun going by getting active and jumping headfirst into a race that has been labeled, “the happiest 5K on the planet.” The Color Run 5K is coming to Pittsburgh, PA on October 12, 2013. As you prepare to be peppered by every color in the rainbow, take a moment to check your running shoes. To make it through the race without injury, your shoes may need a little upgrade.

Why should I replace my running shoes?

You may have your favorite pair from high school that is sentimental to you because you won a championship basketball game while wearing them. It’s time to put them in a box and invest in shoes that will protect your feet. The bottom line is that shoes wear out with use. They can lose their shock absorption, cushioning and stability. Your feet strike the ground with a great amount of force during a run, so when these qualities are gone, you are at risk for injury. Aches, pains, muscle fatigue and shin splints are just a few that could result.

A general rule is to replace your running shoes after 350-550 miles. If you aren’t sure, look closely. Check for worn down soles and creasing in the areas of the midsole. Put your shoes on a counter. If they tilt or lean to one side then the sole is worn down. If you can easily twist the shoe, then their stability has been compromised and it’s time to replace. A tip is to have two pairs of shoes that you can rotate between, which will make both pairs last longer.

If you are a runner, you know that there are several things to think about to make every run as effective as it can be. Proper posture is one element of the running form that will help you move efficiently, conserve energy and avoid injury. Foot specialist, Dr. Phil Pinsker has treated many runners with injuries and even a small complication can have you sidelined indefinitely.

What kind of posture should I have while I run?

When it comes to finding the right posture, start at the top and work your way down.

  • Your head is the starting point and will guide your overall posture. Look ahead naturally and keep your chin parallel to the ground. This will also help to straighten your neck and back.
  • Think of the two “L’s” when it comes to your shoulders: low and loose. You may be tempted to hunch them up as you get tired so try to focus on keeping them level as you run.
  • Your arms should be kept bent at a 90-degree angle and swing forward and back, not across your body. Keep your hands relaxed as clenched fists will use energy and create tension.
  • If your head and shoulders are where they should be, your torso will follow. Run straight and tall to promote optimal lung capacity. This will also maximize the length of each stride. Keep your hips facing forward instead of swinging side-to-side.

Is lower leg pain affecting your running?

If you love to exercise or are trying to be diligent a few months after a New Year’s resolution to get healthy, an injury can be so frustrating. Shin splints is a condition that can develop from being involved in activities that put repetitive stress on your legs such as walking and running.

If you are experiencing pain and swelling in the front of your lower legs, you most likely have shin splints. Dr. Phil Pinsker, foot specialist in Washington, PA treats athletes and sports enthusiasts on a regular basis. Common symptoms experienced with shin splints include shooting pain from your ankle to your knee, tenderness along the shinbone and swelling.

Shin splints can become worse or even develop into a stress fracture. To avoid this from happening, follow these ten tips:

·         Rest your body and reduce activity level

·         Use ice to reduce inflammation

·         Tape up your shin to restrict muscle movement

·         Stay away from exercising on cement or unforgiving surfaces

·         Stay in shape while still resting with low impact exercises such as swimming

·         Avoid going up or down hills as that tends to aggravate shin splints

·         Always warm up and stretch before exercising to prevent future injury
