Protect Your Feet During the WinterIce can be a hidden danger that will have you flat on your back in no time if you aren’t careful. Work and daily activities don’t stop just because winter arrives. Sidewalks and parking lots can be danger zones, making injuries from slips and falls common during the winter months.

Safety Tips to Help Avoid Slips and Falls:

  • Avoid boots and shoes with smooth soles and heels. Choose footwear with non-slip rubber soles.
  • Be cautious and make the assumption that any dark pavement is slippery.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts over snow, as it can be hazardous. Stick to designated sidewalks and walkways.
  • If you have to walk over an area that is icy, take short little steps or shuffle feet and extend your arms out to maintain balance and stability.
  • Keep your hands out of your pockets. Doing this decreases your balance and center of gravity and inhibits your hands from helping if you do fall.
  • Take extra caution when getting in and out of a vehicle and use it for support.

There are also some very useful products out there to help keep you safe in the winter. Grips® Over-the-Shoe is an all-traction line of footwear that slips right over your shoes or boots. They have sandpaper like soles that provide extra traction on snow and ice. They can be easily slipped on, safe for driving and slip off in a cinch when you get to work or back home.

Be sure to see foot specialist, Dr. Pinsker, if you have a foot or ankle injury from falling on ice. Call our Washington, PA podiatric office at (724) 225-7410.
