Putting a few pounds on here and there happens to the best of us. Staying fit and healthy is a discipline and one that takes effort, especially as we get older. Obesity is becoming more prevalent in America and many people are not aware of the serious risks that come with carrying extra weight. Obesity brings the risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. It also brings the risk of seriously harming your feet.

Dr. Phil Pinsker, foot specialist in Washington, PA has treated many patients with foot complications due to extra weight. Your feet bear a significant amount of weight as it is so when extra pounds are added, there are several injuries for which you may be at risk. Some examples of potential complications include:

  • Tendon inflammation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Inflammation of the plantar fascia
  • Gout – a painful condition where uric acid builds up in your joints, particularly the big toe
  • Foot problems associated with diabetes, being overweight raises your risk of diabetes which can result in serious foot complications and possible amputation
  • Peripheral arterial disease – an accumulation of plaque in arteries decreases blood flow
  • Ankle Fractures

If you are overweight and are experiencing any type of foot pain or unusual symptoms, please call Dr. Pinsker for help. He can diagnose any current and potential problems and provide any necessary treatment. A serious injury or a small problem that develops and worsens over time could significantly impact your quality of life. Make an appointment today by calling our podiatric office at (724) 225-7410.
