Haglund's Deformity Treatment in Washington, PennsylvaniaT.S. Eliot was quoted as saying, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” While this may be true in many of life’s situations, going too far when it comes to your feet can actually stop you in your tracks. Haglund’s deformity is a common heel problem and is often the result of wearing poor-fitting shoes for too long.

Haglund’s deformity is often called a “pump bump” because stiff backed high-heels can be to blame. Swelling, redness and pain can result from the bump rubbing against the back of your shoes. The deformity stems from a bony prominence at the back of the heel. It can be there from inheriting a certain foot structure, having high arches, or from underpronation. It can also develop from an abnormal tightness in your Achilles tendon. When this is the case, the deformity develops in addition to Achilles tendonitis, and stretching exercises can be extremely beneficial in treating and preventing the associated symptoms of both conditions.

First, grasp and lift a towel with your toes. Let go, repeat several times and then switch feet. Next try some standing calf stretches, followed by calf stretches done by standing at the edge of a step and letting your feet dip slightly below the edge. Last, stretch your Achilles and plantar fascia by looping a towel around your foot and gently pulling it towards you.  This is done while sitting on the floor with your leg out in front. These are just a few to get you started. If you are experiencing significant pain due to an enlarged bump on your heel, please contact Dr. Philip Pinsker for help. We can identify the cause of your deformity and offer effective treatment options to bring your feet back to health. Call our Washington, PA office at (724) 225-7410 to make an appointment today.
