Are your feet typically an afterthought? If you consider yourself an average person, you will take 8,000-10,000 steps every day. Put that into an even more unimaginable statement, it ends up being four times around the earth! Bet you never thought your feet were put to that much use.

Unfortunately though, for many people, that much wear and tear on feet can really take its toll. Dr. Phil Pinsker, foot specialist in Washington, PA treats patients all the time who come to see him with foot pain or injuries from feet being used and sometimes abused.

So, what kind of foot problems come with so much use?

If you are an athlete always on the court, in the gym and in between locker rooms, your feet may not escape a case of athlete’s foot. It is caused by a fungus that thrives in warm, moist places and can cause redness, itching and flaky skin. Using a good medication until the fungus is gone and keeping feet clean and dry is important in managing a case of athlete’s foot.

Feet tend to be abused by wearing poor footwear. Tight high heels, flip-flops and other unsupportive shoes worn all day can aggravate bunions and hammertoes or cause painful problems such as ingrown toenails and plantar fasciitis.

Once these problems arise, another issue Dr. Pinsker sees is when they are ignored and not treated properly. If you want your feet to continue taking you where you need to be and allowing you to do what you want to do, they need to be taken care of! Even minor issues can become major problems.
