You need to give your feet a break and decide to slip off your shoes for just a few moments. Next you see some turned heads, scrunched up noses and maybe even a few gasps – from others and yourself. Can you relate to this situation? If you suffer with a foot odor problem, you probably do! Let’s start with what causes foot odor.

Foot odor can be from a minor infection but typically smelly feet are due to sweaty feet. Sweating provides a great breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria and fungus can grow in your shoes and find your skin a very comfortable place to live. Sometimes layers of skin are eaten by bacteria, which can produce a foul odor. Some materials in certain socks and shoes, combined with sweaty feet and bacteria, make for a bad recipe when it comes to keeping foot odor at bay. Now that you have possibly lost your appetite for lunch, let’s move on to how to treat your unsightly foot odor!

Dr. Phil Pinsker, foot and ankle specialist in Washington, PA offers his patients several treatment options to help with smelly feet. Some people use a special ointment on feet. Wrapping feet in plastic and leaving it on overnight can provide improvement. Soaking your feet for 30 minutes a day for a week in black tea or a solution of 1-part vinegar to 2-parts water can help kill bacteria and shrink pores. The first option may be a tad more fragrant! Electrolysis can also help reduce sweating as can changes in diet and reducing smoking and alcohol consumption.

If you are fed up with your smelly and sweaty feet, call Dr. Pinkser at (724) 225-7410. He can accurately diagnose your problems and provide safe and effective treatment options.
