It’s estimated that 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 86 million have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. November is National Diabetes Month and Philip S. Pinsker wants to take this opportunity to remind all of our southwestern PA patients who are diabetic to be vigilant in taking care of your feet.

Foot Health Risks

People with diabetes have an increased risk of serious foot health problems. Over 60% of non-traumatic lower limb amputations are the result of diabetic complications. Patients with diabetes often have poor circulation, which means that once an infection or wound occurs in the foot, it takes longer and is more difficult to heal. Neuropathy is also a common condition for diabetics and the loss of sensation that results means that you may not feel the pain of an injury or infection until it has progressed quite far.

Ensuring Good Health for Your Feet

Fortunately, there are many ways that people with diabetes can prevent serious medical problems. Philip S. Pinsker, D.P.M. strongly recommends sticking with a daily foot care regimen that includes visually checking feet and toes along with routine visits to the podiatrist to help spot any issues early and get prompt treatment.

Be on the lookout for these early warning signs that can indicate a potential problem:

  • Numbness or lack of feeling in your feet or toes
  • Overly dry or cracked skin
  • Open sores
  • Blisters
  • Pain or swelling in the feet or ankles
  • Changes in skin color or temperature
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Toenail fungus
