We have all heard the saying, “Monkey see, monkey do.” Children are usually aware of everything going on around them, and parents should realize that their lifestyle choices are often imitated by their children. When the pantry is full of junk food and that is all parents eat, children will follow suit. If staying active isn’t a priority or modeled, children won’t see it as important.

Motivating kids to lead a healthy lifestyle needs to start when they are young. Habits are often hard to break so it is important to instill good ones before the bad ones take over. If you are looking for something fun to do as a family that would also get everyone out and active, sign up for the Kid’s Chance of PA 5/10K Fun Walk/Run event taking place on October 19th, at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The race helps raise scholarship funds for kids in need.

An activity such as this gives your family a goal. Training can begin with encouraging your children to get in a small walk or run everyday and with making healthy eating choices. It may require the same for you as you lead the way! Working together, and then participating in and finishing the race together, is sure to create a great family memory, boost your child’s self-esteem, and get them started on the road to staying healthy. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past thirty years and in 2010 alone, more than a third of children and adolescents were overweight. It is a growing problem but you can keep your children out of the statistics by setting the stage for success while they are young.

Keeping children active requires them to be equipped with appropriate footwear and proper foot care. If at any time your child complains of foot pain, don’t hesitate to call Dr. Philip Pinsker, a foot specialist for the whole family. Individualized care and treatment will mean your child is back running around pain free in no time. Make an appointment today by calling our office in Washington, PA at (724) 225-7410.
