Falling is a true threat to the health and independence of a senior. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for older adults. If you are older, increasing your stability and preventing falls is crucial to maintain whole body health.

What role does footwear play in stability?

You can’t turn back the hands of time as you age and you can’t always keep up with the latest fashion trends either. Seniors, when it comes to footwear, be sensible. A shoe with a high heel, flip-flops or loose house slippers will only increase your risk of stumbling, tripping or falling. The shoes you choose to wear play a huge role in how stable you will feel while standing, walking and doing the activities you love to do.

Dr. Phil Pinsker, foot specialist in Washington, PA, suggests taking this list with you the next time you go out shopping for new shoes:

  • Stay away from shoes that have extra thick soles
  • Have your feet measured in case the size of your foot has changed
  • Choose lace up shoes instead of slip-ons that can slip off. Buy a pair with fabric fasteners if you have trouble tying laces.
  • Look for shoes with non-skid soles for extra safety on slippery surfaces.
  • Choose a shoe that is lightweight and that has a removable insole if you need to wear orthotics.
  • Do not leave the store if the shoes are not comfortable. Shoes should never need a break in period.

Our podiatric office treats patients of all ages and we are here to help if you are an older adult struggling with life due to foot pain.
