With warmer weather on the horizon, the use of sandals and flip-flops is soon to follow. Have your yellow, thickened toenails kept you from summer footwear? You aren't alone. It is estimated that 5-8% of the adult population suffer from a fungal infection of the nail known as onychomycosis. It is a fungal infection of the nail bed that is usually caused by a fungus called T. rubrum. The infection can be picked up in many places as T. rubrum is a fungus common to our day to day lives. Factors creating a lack of immune protection such as diabetes can elevate the chances greatly. Even something like keeping nail polish on too long or a foot bath from your local pedicure shop may cause the infection.
So how do you get rid of it? There are many topical or "paint-on" treatment options that you can try from your local drug store. The problem with these treatments is that they take a great deal of time to work. Some may need as much as a year of daily applications in order to get rid of the infection. Seeing your local podiatrist is the best option. There are oral medications that can greatly decrease the total treatment time. The nail bed is where the infection is, and even oral anti-fungal medications take a long time to penetrate the nail bed and knock out the infection.
If you think you suffer from onychomycosis or any other nail problems, give us a call today and take that important first step towards great foot health!
